ENT Terms

 

Adenoiditis- inflammation of the adenoids, the lymphatic tissue in the back of the nose

Allergic Conjunctivitis- inflammation of the tissue lining of the eyelid due to exposure to allergens

Allergic Rhinitis- inflammation of the nasal tissue, often due to sensitivity to an allergen

Anaphylaxis- a life-threatening allergic hypertensive reaction of the body to a foreign protein or drug

Anosmia- loss of the sense of smell

Aphthous Stomatitis- canker sores

Asthma- condition characterized by difficult breathing, often with cough or wheezing, caused by tightening of the bronchial tubes

Bell's Palsy- paralysis of the face thought to be caused by a swelling of the facial nerve

Cholesteatoma- a cyst-like sac most commonly found in the middle ear

Dehydration- excessive loss of body water

Deviated Nasal Septum- a bend in the bony wall that divides the two sides of the nose

Dysphasia- difficulty swallowing

Epiglottitis- inflammation or infection of the epiglottis, the flap of cartilage behind the tongue

Epistaxis- medical term for nosebleed

Ethmoid Sinus- a collection of air cells within the ethmoid bone

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction- the tube that connects the ear to the throat is not working properly

Eustachian Tube- the tube that runs from the middle ear to the pharynx

Gastroesophageal Reflux- the return of stomach acid and contents back into the esophagus often causing burning (heartburn)

Goiter- enlargements of the thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck

Hoarseness- voice disturbance or voice change

Hypertrophy of Turbinates- enlargement of tissue located in the nose

Hypertrophic Tonsils - excessive enlargement of the tonsils causing breathing or swallowing problems

Impacted Cerumen- earwax that has accumulated in the ear canal and frequently needs to be removed

Inflammation- the reaction of tissue to an injury, resulting in swelling of the infected area

Labyrinthitis- inflammation of the passages of the inner ear, which causes dizziness and vomiting

Laryngitis- vocal cord inflammation. It often causes hoarseness

Lymphadenopathy- enlarged lymph nodes (glands)

Mastoiditis- inflammation or infection of the mastoid bone

Maxilla- the major bone of the upper jaw

Meniere's Disease
- condition characterized by symptoms such as hearing loss, ringing in the ear, dizziness, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ears

Nasal Contusion- bruising of the nasal bone or linings

Nasal Fracture- broken nose

Nasal Polyp- small growth of inflammatory tissue found in the nose

Nasopharynx- the area of the upper throat that lies behind the nose

Neuraliga- pain caused by inflammation or injury to a nerve

Odynophagia- painful swallowing

Oropharynx- the area of the throat that lies behind the mouth

Otalgia- earache (pain in the ear)

Otitis Externa
- inflammation or infection of the outside of the ear or ear canal

Otitis Media- inflammation or infection of the middle ear

Otorrhea- drainage from the ear

Otosclerosis- a condition characterized by hardening of the bones of the ear, causing hearing loss

Parathyroid glands- four small endocrine gland lying close to the posterior surface of the thyroid gland

Parotid gland- the largest of the three major salivary glands, it is located in front and below the ears

Parotitis- inflammation of the parotid gland

Peritonsillar Abscess- infection in a pocket behind the tonsils

Pharyngitis- inflammation of the throat

Polypectomy- removal of a polyp by surgery

Sialadentis- inflammation of one of the saliva producing glands

Sialolothiasis- presence of tiny, stone-like substances in the salivary gland

Sinusitis- inflammation or infection of a sinus

Sleep Apnea- a disorder characterized be the inability to breath during sleep

Spirometry- measurement of breathing capacity with a spirometer

Stomatitis- inflammation in the mouth

Stridor- harsh sound produced when breathing

Thyroid / Parathyroid Diseases- one of several conditions that result when the thyroid or parathyroid glands produce too little or too much hormone

Thyroid Gland- a gland that makes and stores hormones that help regulate the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and metabolism.  It is located in the lower part of the neck

Thyroid Nodule- a little knot of cells on the thyroid gland

Thyroiditis- inflammation of the thyroid gland

Tinnitus-a ringing, buzzing, humming, or clicking sound in the ear

Tonsillitis- inflammation or inflection of the tonsils

Tonsils- lymphatic tissue located on the sides of the throat

Tumor- benign or malignant masses

Tympanic Membrane Perforation- a hole in the eardrum

Tympanosclerosis- scaring of the eardrum

Tympanostomy Tube (ear tubes)- a small plastic tube inserted into the eardrum to keep the middle ear aerated for a prolonged period of time

Uvula- fleshy structure that hangs down the back of the throat

Vertigo
(dizziness)- sensation of moving around in space or of having objects move around the person

Vestibulitis- inflammation or infection of the nose lining

Vocal Cord Polyps / Nodules- growths on the vocal cords, which can cause changes in the voice

Vocal Cords- membranous folds stretched across the larynx, which produce sound by their vibrations as air passes between them
